The dream of Auteurmation is that one can control every facet, every detail of production. That is also the nightmare, that it IS up to the Auteur to control EVERY facet EVERY detail each tick and twitch, each tile on the floor, every voice and gesture.
EVERYTHING must be decided. The color of socks, eyes, buildings, mouldings, furniture, the width of an eyebrow, the length of a nose, not to forget dialogue and plot - and all within the limits of "free" time and disposable income.
What evolves from this paradox
is a strange inchoate form
borne from the tenacious mind
of the AUTEUR.
But what of today's audience? What is their threshold for paradox and inchoate forms?
Needed are enthusiasts, visionaries, connoisseurs, to bare witness to this
struggle between potential and limitation for that is the beauty, the artistry if you will of this form.
It is from this very struggle
thatThese new codes and grammar, if they are to survive, will do so without preamble, without conscious thought, all that is necessary is simply an audience, a connoisseurship open to something fun and a bit different.
